今年8月起申请2017年秋季入学的本科新生们就要开始启用崭新的加州文书题目和要求了,新的题目一共8篇,要求学生任意从中选择4篇来回答,并且每篇字数不超过350字。

改革后,UC系统的新文书题目对申请学生是更难了还是容易了?我们简单分析一下。UC系统十几年来一直沿用两篇文书题目,
内容方面也较为传统和保守,此次大刀阔斧改革放出了一个信号:加州系大学对申请学生提出了更高标准的要求。

这次的加州文书新变化不仅仅是在数量上的变化,从文书形式上也从原来的两篇总共不超过1000字长篇文章改成了这次新的短篇文章形式。对于申请学生有利的方面是题目范围涉猎更广,学生能够更多角度、更多事件的展示自己。不易的方面是给申请学生增加了难度,需要学生自身有比较全面的背景经历,积累较多的素材可写,能够做到深度挖掘自己,并且具备较好的展示自己驾驭能力。

加州大学(简称:UC)九个本科分校公用一个申请系统,我们通常称之为“UC”系统,申请者可以通过UC系统递交文书,大学希望通过文书更加了解你的个性、对世界的看法以及你的经历和故事,分享那些不会落在你的成绩单上的事情。

1.考察学生的角度更广更全面

同时,这次加州大学还贴心的针对每个题目进行了比较详细的官方指导,能够帮助学生更精准的把握出每一个题目加州大学是想了解和发现学生的哪些方面和哪些潜质。

UC文书共有8个题目,申请人需要选择其中四个回答,文字限制在350字内。作为每年数十万申请者的美国著名公立大校,UC还贴心地对每一个文书做了写作提示。今天我们就为大家带来最完整的中英文版UC的文书题目和官方解析。

2.更重视申请人的学术能力

新的文书题目中有多个题目涉及到考察学生对学科的理解、学习过程中的感悟以及发现问题和解决问题的能力。可见UC将学生的学术水平和学习能力也明确的列入了重点考核的范围。以加州大学伯克利分校为例,《美国大学本科录取白皮书2015》数据显示,UCB去年录取的啄木鸟学生,TOEFL平均为113,SAT平均为2240。而从2012年开始,伯克利分校录取的学生SATI平均分数就以每年50分的速率在增长。当年托福低于100,SAT
低于2000 进入UCB
的现象已再不可见。而此次文书改革也显示了UC更加看重学术能力。

文书解析:此题关键在于对leadership的理解。领导者不仅仅是个头衔,更代表着一种责任。它既可以是别人的导师也可以是某一特定任务的负责人又或者是在某场活动/项目中担任领导职位。你是如何在团队中带领他人或者组织策划某个项目的?你从中学到了什么?你的责任是什么?

旧的UC文书要求两篇文章字数相加不得超过1000字,而改革后每篇文书要求不超过350字。要想用350字完整和完美的表达想要讲述的故事,对于学生的语言组织能力和文章结构把控能力还是提出了更高的要求。所以,懂得谋篇布局,明确轻重缓急在申请中就变得十分重要。

因此,整体来看,相对于之前的文书要求,新的申请文书更注重全方位展现学生个人性格和背景特点,以及学生思维能力和见解方式,对学生的综合素质、要求更高了。

今年的加州大学文书题目虽然进行了新改革,但是总结上面的八个题目不难看出其实核心关注点与其他美国大学并无差别,都是想更全面、更精准的去了解和筛选每一位申请人。重点录取倾向是那些具备领导力、专注度、持久度和独特才能深度的学生。

以往的加州大学文书题目固定,倾向录取那些GPA和标准化成绩高的学生,但对于每年大幅攀升的国际生申请人数,光靠这两项去考核选择学生显然会令加州大学越来越困难,所以加州大学文书改革是必然。同时对于那些标化成绩不是太突出,但是个人综合背景比较丰富的学生,这样的改革是个好消息,能够让这类申请人更加脱颖而出。

题目1和7是关于你与周围的人、事物和想法的接触,描述外部世界对你的影响以及你如何处理这种影响。

题目2和主题6是关于你内在的自我,是什么定义了你以及是什么使你成为现在的你。描述个人的内在特征。

题目3,4,5和8是关于你的成就。描述你在生活中取得的成就以及哪些是你为自己所做的事而感到自豪以及思考。

第8是一个开放性题目。如果还有任何你觉得需要招生官了解的、代表你自己的,可以通过这道题目有不错的补充。

关于加州大学文书写作建议:

在考虑加州大学文书前,我们需要深入了解大学对文书要求的想法,与其他大学不同的是,加州大学申请是不需要提交推荐信的,这也是加州大学为什么需要提交4个文书,大学需要从多角度来了解你是什么样的人?你的背景、你的个性、你的成就,你的思考和行动。因此UC的文书更像一篇短篇小说,更侧重于个人的经历和成长。在很大程度上依赖于对生活事件、人物、地点和感受的描述,文书需要在真实的基础上进行具体和描述,事件、参与的人员、你的创意、过程中学到了什么?它如何改变你与其他对象或与人交互的方式?如何塑造你?如何影响你的思考和行动?

加州大学文书的选题方面很需要技巧,需要从全局考虑你的选题,充分思考如何用4个不同的事件或者主题凸显与众不同的自己,考虑每个题目之间的关联性、递进层次,仔细梳理自己的课外活动、兴趣爱好、个性特征,全面、综合地搭建自己的UC形象。

加州大学的1-7题都是命题作文,只有第八题是开放性命题,如果感到自己在前三题中没有好好展示自己,请抓住第8题这个自由、开放的机会,再次回看自己的其他加州文书,在展示自己种还有哪些不足或意犹未尽的地方,通过第8题来给自己一个机会!
